Antacids are medicines which help to neutralise the acid content of your stomach. Co-magaldrox is a mixture of two antacids: aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide. These work together to neutralise the excess acid.

Antacids are most commonly used to provide quick relief of symptoms for intermittent bouts of mild indigestión o acidez. They neutralise the acid in your stomach for a short period, so they are best taken when symptoms occur or are expected to occur, such as after a large meal. You can buy co-magaldrox antacid without a prescription from pharmacies and other retail outlets. Two brands are available - these are Maalox® suspension and Mucogel® suspension.

Before taking co-magaldrox

To make sure this is the right treatment for you, ask a pharmacist or doctor for advice before taking co-magaldrox if:

  • You have any of the following symptoms: difficulty swallowing, loss of blood, weight loss, or if you are being sick (vomiting).

  • You are pregnant. This is because, if you are expecting a baby, medicines should only be taken on the advice of a doctor.

  • You are taking any prescription medicines. This is because antacids can reduce the absorption of many medicines.

  • You have any problems with the way your kidneys work.

  • You have been told by a doctor that you have low levels of phosphate in your blood.

  • You have ever had an allergic reaction to an antacid medicine.

How to take co-magaldrox

  • Before you start taking the suspension, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet attached to the pack. The leaflet will give you more information about the medicine.

  • Remember to shake the bottle well before measuring out each of your doses.

  • The dose for adults and older children is 10-20 ml (two to four 5 ml spoonfuls). It is usually sufficient to take this dose three times a day after meals and at bedtime. You can stir the measured dose into a small glass of water or milk to dilute it before swallowing if you like.

  • Please note: Maalox® is not suitable for children under 14 years old and Mucogel® is not suitable for children under 12 years old.

Obteniendo el máximo de tu tratamiento

  • If your symptoms do not improve within a few days, you should talk with your doctor about this.

  • Do not take antacids at the same time as any other medicines. This is because they can interfere with the way your body absorbs other medicines and may stop them from working properly. Try to leave at least two hours both before and after a dose of co-magaldrox before you take any other medicines.

Can co-magaldrox cause problems?

Occasionally, people who have taken this medicine have experienced digestive symptoms such as mild diarrhoea or constipation. Other side-effects are unlikely, but if you do experience any other symptoms, speak with your doctor or pharmacist.

How to store co-magaldrox

  • Mantenga todos los medicamentos fuera del alcance y la vista de los niños.

  • Almacenar en un lugar fresco y seco, lejos del calor y la luz directos.

  • Once opened, the different products last for different lengths of time. Check the manufacturer's information for your product. Discard any suspension remaining after this time.

Preguntas frecuentes

Can I take co-magaldrox if I am breastfeeding?

The article advises asking a pharmacist or doctor for advice before taking co-magaldrox if you are pregnant, stating that medicines should only be taken on a doctor's advice in that situation. While breastfeeding isn't explicitly mentioned, it's generally good practice to consult a healthcare professional about medication use during lactation to ensure safety for both mother and baby.

Is it safe to use co-magaldrox long-term for chronic indigestion?

Co-magaldrox is most commonly used for quick relief of symptoms for intermittent bouts of mild indigestion or heartburn. If your symptoms do not improve within a few days of using it, the article advises talking with your doctor. This suggests it's not intended for long-term chronic use without medical review.

Does co-magaldrox interact with herbal supplements?

The article states that antacids can reduce the absorption of many prescription medicines and advises leaving at least two hours before and after a dose of co-magaldrox before taking any other medicines. While herbal supplements aren't specifically named, it's wise to apply the same caution, as they could also be affected by antacids or interact with them. Always inform your doctor or pharmacist about any supplements you are taking.

What should I do if I forget to take a dose of co-magaldrox?

The article does not provide specific instructions for missed doses. However, since co-magaldrox is primarily used for symptom relief, it is typically taken when symptoms occur or are expected. If you miss a dose and your symptoms are not present, you likely do not need to take it. If symptoms return, you can take a dose as directed, but do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one.

Can I mix co-magaldrox with juice instead of water or milk?

The article states you can stir the measured dose into a small glass of water or milk to dilute it before swallowing. It does not mention other liquids like juice. Sticking to water or milk as advised ensures the medicine's effectiveness and taste profile are maintained as intended.
