Un aumento de presión dentro de su ojo puede provocar daño al nervio óptico en la parte posterior de su ojo. Cuando esto ocurre se llama glaucoma. Glaucoma can lead to a loss of vision if it is not treated. If you have an increased pressure within your eye but without any damage to the optic nerve, this is called ocular hypertension. People with ocular hypertension have an increased risk of later developing glaucoma. Treatment with travoprost eye drops helps to reduce eye pressure in people with ocular hypertension, and to prevent further eye damage in people with open-angle glaucoma.

Travoprost eye drops work by increasing the drainage of fluid from inside your eye. This helps to lower the pressure within your eye.

Sometimes, more than one type of eye drop is needed to keep the pressure in the eye low. If this is the case for you, you may be asked to use two different eye drops, or you may be given drops which combine more than one type. Travoprost is available as a combination eye drop with another medicine which reduces eye pressure, called timolol (un bloqueador beta), in a brand called DuoTrav®.

Some medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions, and sometimes a medicine can only be used if extra care is taken. For these reasons, before you start using travoprost it is important that your doctor knows:

• Si estás embarazada o amamantando.

• Si te han operado del ojo para reemplazar o extraer el cristalino (como en el caso de la extracción de cataratas).

• Si tienes un problema respiratorio como asma o EPOC.

• Si has tenido problemas en el pasado con infecciones virales en el ojo.

• Si está tomando o usando otros medicamentos o gotas para los ojos. Esto incluye cualquier medicamento que esté tomando y que esté disponible para comprar sin receta, así como medicamentos herbales y complementarios.

• Si alguna vez has tenido una reacción alérgica a un medicamento.

1. Lávese bien las manos antes de usar las gotas.

2. Remove the cap (or twist off the tip of the unit if you are using a single-dose unit).

3. Inclina un poco la cabeza hacia atrás y tira del párpado inferior hacia abajo para formar un bolsillo.

4. Hold the bottle (or unit) upside down near to your eye. Try not to touch your eye as you do this.

5. Apply enough pressure to the bottle to release one drop into your eye. Do not use more than one drop - using several drops does not improve your glaucoma but will increase the risk of side-effects.

7. Repeat the process in your other eye if you have been told to use the drops in both eyes. (The contents of one single-dose unit are enough for both eyes.)

8. Replace the cap (or if you are using the single-dose unit, throw it away).

• Tenga cuidado de no tocar la punta del gotero con su ojo, dedos o cualquier otra superficie. Esto es para evitar que las gotas se contaminen.

• Si estás usando otras gotas para los ojos, deja pasar 5-10 minutos entre la aplicación de cada una. Esto es para evitar que entre más líquido en tu ojo del que puede manejar. De lo contrario, las gotas se desbordarán de tu ojo y no tendrán el efecto deseado.

• When first put in, eye drops can make your eyes water and may sometimes cause blurred vision. If this happens, it should quickly clear. Make sure you can see clearly again before you drive and before using tools or machines.

• Mantén tus citas regulares con tu médico y la clínica ocular para que se pueda verificar tu progreso.

• Do not wear soft contact lenses if you are using bottles of eye drops. This is because bottles contain preservatives which can sometimes affect soft contact lenses. You may wear soft contact lenses if you are using the single-dose units, as there is no preservative in these (but remember to take out your lenses to apply the drops and wait for at least 15 minutes before putting your lenses back in).

Along with their useful effects, eye drops can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. The table below contains the most common ones associated with travoprost. You will find a full list in the manufacturer's information leaflet supplied with the drops. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but speak with your doctor or pharmacist for further advice if any of the following continue or become troublesome.

• Eye drops can be used for four weeks once the bottle has been opened. Even if there is still some solution remaining after this time, throw it away and use a new bottle. This will help to prevent the risk of eye infections.

• Single-dose units should be used immediately the unit is opened. Do not store or re-use opened units for later doses. This is because the units do not contain any preservative.
