Can I take Elvanse adult and Propranolol together?

Guía de interacción de medicamentos

Taking Elvanse Adult (lisdexamfetamine) and propranolol together can cause them to work against each other. Elvanse is a stimulant that increases heart rate and blood pressure, while propranolol is a beta-blocker used to lower them. This combination can lead to unpredictable changes in blood pressure and heart rate. In some cases, it may cause a 'paradoxical' rise in blood pressure because the propranolol blocks the 'relaxing' receptors in the blood vessels, leaving the 'constricting' effects of the stimulant unopposed.

Por qué sucede esto

This is a pharmacodynamic interaction. Elvanse increases the release of chemicals like noradrenaline. Propranolol blocks beta-receptors (which usually help the heart and vessels relax) but does not block alpha-receptors (which cause vessels to tighten). This can lead to 'unopposed alpha-stimulation', potentially causing high blood pressure or heart strain. Additionally, the drugs have opposite effects on the central nervous system.

You should only take these two medications together if they have been specifically prescribed by a doctor who is aware of both. Your doctor should monitor your blood pressure and heart rate regularly, especially when starting or changing doses. If you experience chest pain, a very fast heartbeat, or a severe headache, seek medical advice immediately.

Asma o EPOC

You must not take propranolol if you have asthma or a history of wheezing. It can cause a severe, potentially life-threatening narrowing of the airways (bronchospasm).

Heart conditions or high blood pressure

This medicine can significantly increase your heart rate and blood pressure. It must be used with extreme caution if you have existing heart problems or severe hypertension.

Condiciones de salud mental

Elvanse can worsen or trigger symptoms of psychosis, mania, or aggression. Conversely, propranolol can sometimes worsen symptoms of depression. Monitor your mood closely.

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol. Alcohol can increase the risk of heart-related side effects with Elvanse and can unpredictably increase or decrease the levels of Propranolol in your blood, potentially making it less effective or increasing side effects like dizziness.

Cafeína (Café, té, bebidas energéticas)

Limit or avoid caffeine. Both Elvanse and Propranolol affect your heart rate and blood pressure. Caffeine is a stimulant that can worsen side effects like jitteriness, anxiety, palpitations, and high blood pressure. Propranolol is often prescribed to lower heart rate, which caffeine opposes.

Fruit juices and Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)

Avoid large amounts of fruit juices or Vitamin C supplements around the time you take your dose. While Elvanse is less affected by stomach acidity than other stimulants, highly acidic foods or drinks can still potentially reduce how much medicine your body absorbs.
