This classic recipe for meatballs in red sauce is a protein-packed favourite that brings authentic Mediterranean flavours to your kitchen. By combining lean minced beef with seasoned Italian sausage and a touch of sharp Pecorino Romano cheese, these meatballs achieve a depth of flavour and a tender texture that is truly satisfying. The simple tomato purée transforms in the oven, creating a rich, savoury sauce that coats the meat perfectly as it bakes.
Ideal for a nutritious mid-week dinner, these homemade meatballs are incredibly versatile and easy to prepare. Serve them over a bed of al dente spaghetti for a comforting family meal, or alongside steamed greens for a lighter, high-protein alternative. This dish is perfect for batch cooking or meal prep, as the flavours only improve the following day.

Ingredients for Old-Fashioned Meatballs in Red Sauce
450g ground round (15 percent fat)
230g sweet Italian sausage
80ml plain dry bread crumbs
2 eggs, lightly beaten
2 large garlic cloves, minced
40g grated Pecorino Romano cheese
200g canned crushed tomatoes in heavy purée
How to make Old-Fashioned Meatballs in Red Sauce
Remove ground round and sausage from refrigerator 30 to 60 minutes before cooking, if possible. Place bread crumbs in large bowl and stir in 80ml water. When absorbed, blend together with eggs, garlic, 40g grated Romano, 1/4 teaspoons salt, and 1/4 teaspoons pepper.
Preheat oven to 218°C. Add meats to bread crumb mixture and combine well with fork. Form into 12 even balls. Lay in 1 layer in 8 x 14-inch baking dish so each is separated by about 1 inch.
Stir 60ml water into crushed tomatoes and season with 1/8 teaspoons salt and pepper to taste. Pour tomatoes over and around meatballs. Sprinkle tops with remaining 1 1/3 tablespoons grated Romano. Bake in centre of oven until meatballs are just cooked through, about 18 minutes. Serve hot.
