Can I take Elvanse adult and Sertraline together?

Guía de interacción de medicamentos

Taking Elvanse Adult (lisdexamfetamine) and sertraline together can increase the risk of a rare but serious condition called serotonin syndrome. It can also lead to increased heart rate, high blood pressure, and feelings of jitteriness or anxiety.

Por qué sucede esto

Both medications increase the levels of certain chemicals in the brain. Sertraline increases serotonin, while Elvanse primarily increases dopamine and noradrenaline but can also slightly raise serotonin levels. When combined, serotonin levels can become too high. Additionally, both drugs stimulate the cardiovascular system, which can put extra strain on the heart.

You should only take these two medications together if they have been specifically prescribed by your doctor, who will monitor you closely. Seek immediate medical help if you experience high fever, agitation, confusion, shivering, muscle stiffness, or rapid heartbeat. Your doctor may need to adjust your doses or monitor your blood pressure more frequently.

Serotonin Syndrome

Taking these medicines together increases the risk of serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition. Seek immediate medical help if you experience high fever, agitation, confusion, or muscle twitching.

Cardiovascular conditions

This medicine can cause a sudden increase in heart rate and blood pressure. It must not be used if you have serious heart problems or advanced hardening of the arteries.

Bleeding disorders

Sertraline increases the risk of serious bleeding, especially if you are also taking aspirin, ibuprofen, or blood-thinning medications like warfarin.

Alcohol

You should avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking these medicines. Alcohol can increase the risk of side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, and confusion. For Elvanse specifically, alcohol can change how the medicine is released into your body and may worsen heart-related side effects.

Jugo de toronja

Grapefruit juice can increase the levels of sertraline in your blood, which may increase the risk of side effects. It is best to avoid drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice while taking this medication.

Cafeína (Café, té, bebidas energéticas)

Elvanse is a stimulant. Consuming caffeine while taking it can lead to an 'additive' effect, causing jitteriness, anxiety, a racing heart, and difficulty sleeping. It is advisable to limit caffeine intake until you know how the medicine affects you.

Vitamin C / Fruit juices / Fizzy drinks

While Elvanse is less affected by stomach acidity than some other ADHD meds, very high doses of Vitamin C or highly acidic juices/sodas taken at the same time as your dose may slightly reduce how much medicine your body absorbs.
