Can I take Bumetanide and Dapagliflozin together?

Both medicines work by removing fluid from your body through your urine. Bumetanide is a 'loop diuretic' (water tablet) that prevents your kidneys from reabsorbing salt and water. Dapagliflozin is an SGLT2 inhibitor that removes sugar and water through the urine. When used together, their effects add up, causing the body to lose much more fluid and salt than intended.

You must speak to your doctor before taking these together. They may need to adjust your dose of bumetanide. Ensure you stay well-hydrated and tell your doctor immediately if you feel very thirsty, confused, or dizzy when standing up. Your doctor will likely want to perform regular blood tests to check your kidney function and salt levels.

Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)

This medicine can cause a serious condition called ketoacidosis even if your blood sugar levels are normal. Seek urgent medical help if you feel very sick, have stomach pain, or your breath smells fruity. Stop taking it if you are fasting for surgery or have a severe illness.

Dehydration and Low Blood Pressure

Both medicines increase fluid loss. You are at high risk of severe dehydration and a sudden drop in blood pressure, especially if you have diarrhoea, vomiting, or are in very hot weather. Ensure you stay hydrated.

Fournier’s Gangrene

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience pain, tenderness, redness, or swelling in the genital or anal area, accompanied by fever or malaise. This can be a sign of a rare but life-threatening infection.

Alcohol

Alcohol can increase the risk of dehydration and low blood pressure (dizziness or fainting) when taken with these medicines. For dapagliflozin specifically, excessive alcohol consumption can increase the risk of a serious condition called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
