An STI (sexually transmitted infection) is an infection passed through sexual contact. You can find out if you have an STI by doing a test.

Genital warts are small, soft lumps that appear on the genital or anal area. They are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), and you usually get them through skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity.

Chlamydia is a common STI caused by the bacteria, Chlamydia trachomatis. It is passed on through unprotected sex. Symptoms may include pain when peeing, unusual discharge, or discomfort in the lower tummy.

Gonorrhoea is a STI caused by the bacteria, Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Symptoms can include pain or burning when you pee, unusual discharge from the genitals, and sometimes soreness or swelling.

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the immune system, making it harder for your body to fight infections. You can catch HIV by having unprotected sex with someone who has the virus.

Syphilis is a STI caused by the bacteria, Treponema pallidum. It can cause sores, rashes, and serious health problems if left untreated.

Trichomoniasis is a STI caused by the parasite, Trichomonas vaginalis. You usually get it through unprotected sex with someone who is infected.

Urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra-the tube that carries pee out of the body. It is often caused by infection and can lead to symptoms such as pain or burning when you pee.
