Gonorrhoea is a STI caused by the bacteria, Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Symptoms can include pain or burning when you pee, unusual discharge from the genitals, and sometimes soreness or swelling.

Transmisión

You can get gonorrhoea by having unprotected sex (vaginal, anal, or oral) with someone who has the infection.

Symptoms of gonorrhoea can include a burning sensation when peeing, unusual discharge from the penis or vagina, and sometimes pain or swelling, but many people don’t have any symptoms at all.

Tests

Gonorrhoea is usually tested by providing a urine sample or a swab from the affected area, like the cervix, throat, or rectum, which is then checked for the infection in a lab.

Tratamiento

Gonorrhoea is treated with antibiotics, usually given as an injection and sometimes combined with oral tablets.

Complicaciones

If left untreated, gonorrhoea can lead to serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ectopic pregnancy, infertility, and increased risk of HIV.
