Can I take Doxazosin and Strivit D3 together?

Why this happens

Doxazosin is an alpha-blocker used for high blood pressure or prostate issues, while Strivit D3 is a vitamin supplement. They are processed by different pathways in the body and do not interfere with how the other works.

What you should do

You can continue taking both medications as prescribed. As with any blood pressure medication, it is always a good idea to stand up slowly from a sitting or lying position to avoid dizziness, but this is a side effect of the doxazosin itself rather than an interaction with the vitamin.

Important precautions

First-dose hypotension

Doxazosin can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, especially after the very first dose. This may make you feel dizzy or faint when standing up. It is recommended to take your first dose at bedtime to avoid falls.

Cataract surgery

If you are due to have eye surgery for cataracts, you must tell your surgeon you are taking doxazosin. It can cause a complication called 'Floppy Iris Syndrome' which the surgeon needs to prepare for.

Food and drink warnings

Alcohol

It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking doxazosin. Alcohol can increase the blood-pressure-lowering effect of this medicine, which may make you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or faint, especially when standing up.

High-calcium foods (Dairy)

While taking Vitamin D, you should not consume excessive amounts of calcium-rich foods (like milk, cheese, and yoghurt) or calcium supplements without medical supervision. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium; too much can lead to high calcium levels in your blood (hypercalcaemia), which can damage your kidneys and heart.
