Falafel with Hummus

This classic vegan falafel with hummus dish is a staple of Middle Eastern cuisine, offering a satisfying blend of savoury spices and satisfying textures. These golden patties are made using canned chickpeas, making them a quick and accessible option for a nutritious midweek meal. The combination of earthy cumin, fresh parsley, and a hint of garlic pepper results in a fragrant, flavourful bite that is crisp on the outside and wonderfully tender within.

Served as a light lunch, a vibrant starter, or part of a larger mezze platter, this homemade falafel is naturally plant-based and protein-rich. Pairing the warm, spiced patties with a smooth, shop-bought hummus creates a simple yet delicious contrast that is perfect for sharing with friends. It is an excellent choice for those seeking a healthy, homemade alternative to takeaway favourites.

  • 30g chopped onion

  • 3 tablespoons plain flour plus more for dredging

  • 2 1/2 teaspoons salt-free garlic pepper spice blend

How to make Falafel with Hummus

Puree canned garbanzo beans, chopped onion, 3 tablespoons plain flour, garlic pepper spice blend, ground cumin, baking powder, and salt in processor until coarse puree forms. Add chopped Italian parsley; process just to blend. Generously sprinkle plate with plain flour. Roll level tablespoonfuls garbanzo bean mixture into balls; transfer balls to plate. Roll falafel in flour to coat generously; flatten balls slightly.

Pour enough vegetable oil into heavy large skillet to reach depth of 1/2 inch. Heat oil to 191°C. Working in 2 batches, fry falafel patties until deep brown, turning once, about 3 minutes. Transfer falafel patties to paper towels to drain. Serve falafel with hummus.
