Turmeric may interfere with how your body absorbs levothyroxine and could potentially affect your thyroid hormone levels. This might make your thyroid medication less effective or, in some cases, cause your thyroid levels to become unstable.

Why this happens
Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin. There is some evidence that curcumin can interfere with the absorption of medications in the gut. Additionally, turmeric may have slight effects on thyroid function itself or the way thyroid hormones are converted in the body, though more research is needed to confirm the exact process.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou should ideally take your levothyroxine on an empty stomach, at least 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast or any other supplements. If you wish to take turmeric, do so at a different time of day (at least 4 hours apart). If you start taking turmeric regularly, inform your doctor so they can monitor your thyroid levels (TSH) and adjust your dose if necessary.
