Taking copper and iron supplements at the same time can reduce the amount of copper your body absorbs. Over time, this may lead to a copper deficiency.

Why this happens
Copper and iron use the same 'pathway' or transporter to get from your gut into your bloodstream. Because they compete for the same spot, taking a large dose of iron can 'crowd out' the copper, preventing it from being absorbed properly.
What you should do
Back to contentsTo ensure you get the full benefit of both minerals, do not take them at the exact same time. It is best to space them at least 2 hours apart. If you are taking a multivitamin that contains small amounts of both, this is usually fine, but high-dose individual supplements should be separated.
