Why this happens

Both medicines act as central nervous system (CNS) depressants. Co-codamol contains codeine (an opioid), and pregabalin is a nerve pain medicine. When used together, they have an 'additive effect', meaning they double up on their side effects, particularly those that slow down the brain and the muscles that control breathing.

You should only take these two medicines together if your doctor is aware and has specifically prescribed both. If you are taking them together, start with the lowest possible dose. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the combination affects you. Seek urgent medical help if you experience extreme sleepiness, shallow breathing, or difficulty waking up.
