Why this happens
Berberine has 'chelating' properties, which means it can bind to metal ions like copper in the digestive tract. When berberine binds to copper, it forms a complex that is difficult for the body to absorb into the bloodstream.
What you should do
Back to contentsTo ensure you get the full benefit of both, it is best to separate the doses. Take your copper supplement at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after taking berberine. If you are taking a multivitamin containing copper, the same timing rule applies.
