Why this happens
Apixaban works by blocking a specific clotting factor. While Vitamin K does not directly block apixaban (unlike warfarin), very high doses can affect the body's overall clotting balance. Conversely, high doses of Vitamin E or certain herbal components in 'specialised' multivitamins can have their own mild blood-thinning effects, which could add to the effect of apixaban.
What you should do
Back to contentsCheck the label of your multivitamin. If it contains standard amounts of vitamins (100% of the Daily Value or less) and no herbal 'extras', it is generally safe. Avoid 'high-strength' Vitamin E supplements or multivitamins with added herbal ingredients like Ginkgo Biloba, Ginseng, or St John's Wort without consulting your pharmacist first. Always inform your doctor about all supplements you are taking.
