Taking these two medicines together can cause your blood pressure to drop too low. It can also increase the amount of amlodipine in your body, which may lead to side effects like swelling of the ankles, dizziness, or a fast heartbeat. In rare cases, this combination can lead to serious kidney problems.

Why this happens
Clarithromycin blocks a specific enzyme in your liver (called CYP3A4) that is responsible for breaking down amlodipine. Because the amlodipine isn't being cleared from your system as quickly as usual, the levels build up in your blood, making the medicine much stronger than intended.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou should speak to your doctor before taking these together. They may prefer to prescribe a different antibiotic that does not interact with your blood pressure medication. If you must take both, your doctor may advise you to monitor your blood pressure closely at home and watch for signs of low blood pressure, such as feeling faint or dizzy when standing up.
