Taking St John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) with sertraline can lead to a serious condition called serotonin syndrome. This happens when there is too much of a chemical called serotonin in your brain. Symptoms can include feeling very agitated, confused, sweaty, shaky, or having a fast heartbeat. In severe cases, it can be dangerous.

Why this happens
Both sertraline and St John's Wort increase the levels of serotonin in the brain. When used together, they can raise these levels to a point that becomes toxic to the body. Additionally, St John's Wort can change how your liver processes sertraline, making the levels of the medicine in your blood unpredictable.
What you should do
Back to contentsDo not take St John's Wort if you are already taking sertraline. If you are currently taking both, do not stop suddenly, but contact your GP or pharmacist immediately for advice on how to stop safely. If you experience severe shivering, fever, or confusion, seek urgent medical help.
