There is no direct interaction between allopurinol and ibrutinib. However, they are often prescribed together to manage a specific complication called 'Tumour Lysis Syndrome' (TLS). While they do not interfere with each other's metabolism, taking them together requires careful monitoring of your kidney function and blood counts by your medical team.

Why this happens
Allopurinol lowers uric acid levels in the blood, while ibrutinib works by killing cancer cells. When cancer cells die quickly (which can happen when starting ibrutinib), they release substances that can harm the kidneys. Allopurinol is used to protect the kidneys during this process. There is no evidence that one drug changes the concentration or effectiveness of the other in the body.
