Why this happens
Ramipril is an ACE inhibitor. It works by blocking an enzyme that normally breaks down a substance called bradykinin. If you have an allergic reaction, levels of bradykinin and histamine rise. Because ramipril prevents these from being cleared away, the swelling and airway constriction can become much worse than usual.
What you should do
Back to contentsIf you have a known severe allergy (like a nut or bee sting allergy), tell your doctor before starting ramipril. If you experience any swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat while taking ramipril, stop taking it immediately and seek emergency medical help. If you are planning to have allergy skin testing or 'allergy shots' (desensitisation therapy), inform your specialist that you are taking an ACE inhibitor.
