Can I take Allergan and Abilify together?

Taking these two medicines together can make you feel very sleepy, dizzy, or confused. It can also make it harder to concentrate or perform tasks that require alertness. In some cases, it may increase the risk of 'anticholinergic' side effects, such as a dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, or difficulty passing urine.

Why this happens

Both medicines affect the central nervous system. Allergan (diphenhydramine) is a sedating antihistamine, and Abilify (aripiprazole) is an antipsychotic. When used together, their calming (sedative) effects add up. Additionally, both drugs can block a chemical in the body called acetylcholine, which leads to drying side effects.

You should speak to your doctor before taking these two medicines together. If your doctor confirms you can take both, avoid drinking alcohol and do not drive or operate machinery, as your coordination and reaction times will be significantly slowed. It is illegal to drive if your driving is impaired by any medicine.
