Taking Evacal (calcium and vitamin D) at the same time as alendronic acid can stop the alendronic acid from being absorbed into your body. This means the medicine for your bones will not work properly.

Why this happens
Alendronic acid is very sensitive to other substances in the stomach. Calcium binds to the alendronic acid, creating a large 'clump' that the body cannot absorb into the bloodstream.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou must wait at least 30 minutes after taking your alendronic acid before taking your Evacal or any other food, drink, or supplements. Most doctors recommend taking alendronic acid first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, and then taking your Evacal later in the day (for example, at lunchtime or in the evening).
