Why this happens

Vitamin D helps your body absorb more calcium. Allopurinol can sometimes affect how the kidneys handle minerals. When taken together, there is a small risk that calcium levels could rise above the healthy range. Additionally, high calcium levels can occasionally interfere with the gout-lowering effects of allopurinol.

You can usually take these medicines together, but you should have your blood calcium levels monitored regularly by your doctor. If you develop symptoms of high calcium—such as feeling unusually thirsty, needing to pee more often, constipation, or stomach pain—contact your GP. Ensure you stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
