Taking sulforaphane (often found in broccoli sprout supplements) alongside abiraterone may lower the amount of abiraterone in your blood. This could make your prostate cancer treatment less effective.

Why this happens
Abiraterone is broken down in the liver by a specific protein called CYP3A4. Sulforaphane can 'switch on' or increase the activity of this protein. This causes your body to process and remove abiraterone much faster than intended, leading to lower levels of the medicine in your system.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou should avoid taking sulforaphane supplements while you are being treated with abiraterone. If you are already taking these supplements, speak to your doctor or oncologist before stopping or changing your routine. It is generally fine to eat normal amounts of broccoli as part of a balanced diet, but concentrated supplements should be avoided.
