Why this happens

5-HTP can interfere with the liver enzymes (specifically CYP3A4) that break down certain statins like atorvastatin, simvastatin, and lovastatin. This can cause the level of the statin to build up in your blood to dangerous levels. Additionally, both substances can influence serotonin pathways, though the muscle risk is the primary concern.

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before combining 5-HTP with a statin. If you are already taking them together, watch for unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, as well as dark-coloured urine. If you experience these symptoms, stop taking the medication and seek medical advice immediately.
