Taking 5-HTP with a multivitamin that contains Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) may cause the 5-HTP to be converted into serotonin in the bloodstream before it reaches the brain. This can reduce the effectiveness of the 5-HTP for mood or sleep and may increase the risk of side effects like nausea or heart palpitations.

Why this happens
Vitamin B6 is a necessary co-factor for the enzyme that converts 5-HTP into serotonin. If too much B6 is present in the digestive tract or blood at the same time as 5-HTP, the conversion happens too early (peripherally) rather than inside the brain where it is needed.
