Drug interaction guide

Buprenorphine (the active ingredient in your 20 microgram/hour patch) may interfere with how well metformin controls your blood sugar levels. This could lead to higher blood sugar levels than usual. Why this happens

Opioid medications like buprenorphine can sometimes affect the body's ability to manage glucose (sugar) and may reduce the effectiveness of diabetes medications like metformin. There is also an additive effect where the stomach-related side effects of both drugs combine.

You should monitor your blood sugar levels more frequently when starting or changing the dose of your buprenorphine patches. If you notice your blood sugar readings are consistently high, or if you feel unusually thirsty or tired, contact your doctor. It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while using these medications, as alcohol can increase the risk of side effects and affect blood sugar control.
