Taking ibuprofen with warfarin significantly increases your risk of serious bleeding, particularly in the stomach or gut. This combination can cause internal bleeding that may be difficult to stop.

Why this happens

This interaction happens for two reasons. First, both medicines thin the blood in different ways, so their effects add together. Second, ibuprofen can irritate the lining of the stomach and intestines, making it more likely for a bleed to start in those areas.

You should avoid taking ibuprofen while you are on warfarin unless your doctor specifically tells you to. If you need pain relief, paracetamol is usually a safer choice, but you should still limit your alcohol intake and check with a pharmacist first. Seek medical help immediately if you notice signs of bleeding, such as dark 'tarry' stools, coughing up blood, or unusual bruising.
