Why this happens

Both medicines act on the central nervous system to slow down brain activity. Diazepam is a benzodiazepine (sedative) and codeine is an opioid (painkiller). When used together, their sedative effects add up, significantly increasing the risk of respiratory depression (dangerously slow breathing).

You must speak to your doctor before taking these medicines together. They should only be prescribed together if there are no other options. If your doctor does prescribe both, they should use the lowest doses possible for the shortest time. Seek emergency medical help immediately if you experience extreme sleepiness, breathing difficulties, or if a person taking these medicines becomes unresponsive.
