Taking these two medicines together can make you feel very sleepy, dizzy, and confused. It can also slow down your breathing to a dangerous level and make you more likely to have an accident or fall. Because co-codamol contains paracetamol, you must also be very careful with alcohol.

Why this happens
Both medicines act on the central nervous system to slow down brain activity. When used together, their sedative effects are added together (an 'additive effect'), which significantly increases the risk of extreme drowsiness and breathing difficulties.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou should speak to your doctor before taking these together. If your doctor prescribes both, use the lowest dose possible for the shortest time. Do not drive or operate machinery. It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol, as it will further increase the risk of breathing problems and liver damage.
